The Bonneville Salt Flats encompass an area of 46 square miles. ![]() Though many zoom by on I-80, I highly recommend making the short side trip to experience the salt flats up close. Heading west from Salt Lake City and past the Salt Flats Rest Area their is an exit for the raceway at the very other end of the salt flats with literally only a Sinclair gas station.World renowned as the place to set land speed records, Bonneville Salt Flats is a fascinating place to visit. Once you make it to the rest area, driving out there doesn’t seem like a smart idea or looks a little intimidating but just got for it! The second way to access the salt flats is via the raceway. Also, just note for the rest of the salt flats that if it looks wet, avoid it. We saw multiple tire tracks where it was pretty obvious someone tried and got stuck. Hop the curb and drive out onto the salt flats!įirst, lets discuss the two ways to drive out onto the salt flats legally and safely! When coming from Salt Lake City there is a long stretch before getting to the Salt Flats Rest Area that makes just hopping off the interstate and driving out look so appealing, but don't do it! There are loads of signs telling you not to, which you should abide by, but a lot of those areas can be wet and your vehicle will get stuck immediately.
